“Do not remember the past events; pay no attention to things of old. Look, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.”

~ Isaiah 43:18-19 (CSB)

As a counselor I often sit with people who are in pain. Women and men who are walking through difficult, and sometimes, unthinkable circumstances and tragedies. As a follower of Jesus, I believe that the counseling space is a sacred one. My client and I are never alone as we make our way through a hard season together. The Holy Spirit is right there ~ listening, guiding, and encouraging. But sometimes we can become stuck ~ ruminating on our past mistakes and hurts. Yet, I am constantly amazed at the resilience and strength of the human spirit.

Here are just a few of the lessons my clients and The Holy Spirit are teaching me:

*Every person, every life is a lot like an onion. Peel each layer away carefully and with great care.

*It is good and even helpful to be silent.

*Hard things and difficult times do not define a person’s life ~ they are but a chapter, not the whole story.

*It is possible to hold Joy and Sorrow in our hands at the same time.

*We can share laughter even in the toughest of circumstances.

* Let God do what only He can do.

*Draw near to God and He will sit with us in the middle of our mess.

Walking alongside people during their most challenging seasons is a privilege. I am offered a front row seat to The Holy Spirit’s mending and healing. He always provides a glimmer of joy even in a sometimes gray horizon and points us to a river of Hope. Our God is always loving, always protecting, always doing. I am thankful He meets us in the sacred space.

Some of my favorite verses in Isaiah. It’s a joy to call you fiend and see the goodness you bring to brokenness all because you believed our Jesus is who he says he is!
